So recently, I was online surfing the many foxbodies that often populate the world of Ebay. My dad sees me looking and asks, "Have you ever looked into the Mercury Capri?"

So obviously, this starts a whole new browsing session. IMO, it looks like a foxbody, but with a more IMSA-like front bumper and the window of a Jensen Interceptor. So as I'm scrolling through the various pages on the internets, my dad starts showing me pictures of one that he owned way back when, a pretty special one, known as the "Black Magic Edition."

Kinja'd!!!

I fell in love. Fat tires, a badass "zero fucks given" front fascia, bizzare wheels, and that beautiful black and gold combo. And to this day, I search for one. I've never even seen one cross the Ebays, and have no idea it will cost once one does (probably a lot).

And today, when I was telling a friend about one, he didn't even know what a Mercury Capri was (and he actually is a car guy). So here's to what seems to be a forgotten-but-interesting classic.

Yeah the Capri from that era was more or less a fox body Mustang from what I understand. I've seen a few here in Utah now and then, but I've never had the opportunity for seat time to compare it to our fox bodies from the same era.

I'm just gonna go out on a ledge and assume it would be very much like the Mustangs.

I might be talking out of my ass on this one, but if memory serves, there was a Ford Capri in Europe that was different from this. Just scanning quickly through the wikipedia page it looks like it's still quite the ass-kicker.

Anyone from Europe able to weigh in?

I actually know a bit about that one, and yeah, it was decent. Lighter, prettier, and sportier. Smaller engine, but simplify and add lightness.

From what I've gathered, it really is a foxbody underneath, meaning it probably feels the same. I've just always found them a bit prettier and a bit more exclusive.

Yeah, that's a good looking car. I like that quite a bit.

I'm kind of partial to the European Fords, especially the ones from that era. Not that we didn't have nifty Fords in NA, but in my personal humble opinion we got shafted in NA.

I agree entirely, and have forever. Let's take a look back

What we got: Mustang, Taurus Sho

What they got: Mk2 Escort, Capri, Sierra Cosworth, Escort Cosworth, the newer Focus RS...It's just not fair

Yeah, I love that back. It always looked like if a foxbody and a Jensen Interceptor had a baby

The European Capris are awesome in every way, but rare as hens teeth now. Most of them rusted away or got modified and destroyed. Too many of them had pretty awful 1.3 and 1.6 4-bangers though.

The Mk3 Capri, like I also posted was pretty much my favorite car of my childhood. Praying for a revival.

Yeah, I particularly liked that Escort and Sierra Cosworths. Ever since TG did that bit about affordable track cars, and I think it was Clarkson who showed up with the Cosworth.

Sorry for being pendantic but Clarkson actually used a Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth. Only difference is a less striking body style as far as I know.

I grew up in a Capri like that. A used euro-capri, then a new 79 Fox Capri when it came out. My parents now have a 91 Capri convertible, and would have a 2005, if Mercury had still made them, but rather an 05 Mustang instead.

Looks pretty sexy in an S&M sorta way, not that I'm into that stuff, but I like this Fox Capri.

Ford Europe has made some really great cars, so has Ford NA. When I was growing up the Sierra Cosworth was THE car in many ways. Much like the Mustang would be to young American car enthusiasts, I assume.

I've gotta say that I dig the Fox Capri a lot. I think I might even prefer it to the Fox Mustang.

Foxbodies in order of most awesome to least awesome (but still fuggin rad)

Mercury Capri

Lincoln MK VII

T-Bird

Mustang

Like I said, all foxbodies are pretty damn cool, but cars I particularly lust over include just about any capri, the 4cyl-turbo Tbird and any Lincoln MK VII with a M/T conversion.

Personally, I think the mustang is the least interesting of the fox bodies. But that may be because we have so many of them here. Its rare to see a capri or a MKVII even in America.
